The next time you saddle up to the bar to wet your whistle, consider giving your go-to beverage the night off and opt for a libation wholly unique to your tastebuds. If your drink of choice is a dirty vodka martini, try a different version with Death's Door Gin, Gourmet Olive Brine, and a dash of McClure's Pickle Brine (yes, we are serious)--give it a good, hard shake over lots of ice and strain into a very cold martini glass; stuff a crumble of gorgonzola into a large green olive or grab a pickled green bean for garnish and enjoy. While vodka is certainly great and all, gin adds a level of distinguished taste to an otherwise sturdy classic (and the bartender will definitely respect your mature request). 

Experimenting with various forms of liquors, vermouths, bitters, whiskeys, grapes and so forth to remake popular cocktails or even to boost their flavor profiles should be embraced more frequently. Having a drink of choice; a go-to when there's little else to choose from is a no-brainer for every indulging adult. Awakening the palate with something new and fresh though, well, that just makes for a happier hour

With all of the modern cocktail-conscious bars penetrating the social scene from here to California and beyond, those of us that like to partake can easily do so with exciting, inspired libations now more than ever. One doesn't have to venture out for $12 and up beverages every time the craving hits, however. Experimenting with creative cocktails at home will not only impress upon your ego, but the effort is sure to awe underwhelmed guests too.
