Some of the world's most renowned headphones are wholly designed and fabricated on a quiet street in south Brooklyn. Since 1953, the only changes Grado Labs has undergone is the steady rise of success since Joseph Grado first opened for business. At just 16, Grado left his leadership and studies behind at vocational school where he studied watch-making to teach the trade at Tiffany & Company during his evenings. It would be his introduction to the modern hi-fi sound of the '50s that would put Grado in the path he was destined for. The original New Yorker had a gifted ear and those talented few that would aid in his teachings took notice. Grado had a special knack for producing phono cartridges and by 1955 he managed to scrape enough money together to set up a small factory of his own in his Sicilian-born father's grocer business on Brooklyn's south side, where the shop still exists today. Joseph Grado is responsible for inventing the stereo moving coil phono cartridge and holds up to 48 patents. He is the leader in phono cartridge design innovation in our lifetime.
In 1990, Joseph's nephew John Grado would take over as President and CEO of the company, designing and creating Grado's first line of headphones, which the Brooklyn business is known for today. John has since created up to 25 headphone versions that have gone on to win more awards than any headphone line in the entire world. This true to form family business has perfectly maintained exactly what Joseph set out to accomplish from day one decades ago, without enabling the company's growth or market evolvement. What places the Grado Labs headphones high above the competition is the crisp quality of the sound, the fit and feel of the over-ear design or smaller earbuds, and the gorgeous details in the styles, such as the mahogany finishings of the Reference Series. Trust us, from the heart of the small, family-run business to the chic aesthetics and brilliant, precise capabilities you can place your bets that the Grado headphones are the very best out there.
