In this town, creative masterminds and brilliant businessmen are aplenty. Since the initial rise of New York City, industry professionals have continuously set the bar high for those that would later surpass them, or at least die trying. Around every corner of this city is a person with an impressive résumé, carrying an intimidating rolodex and what's more, they are only getting younger and more experienced by the day. Many of these talented overachievers become so consumed with being the best and getting ahead that losing sight of the heart of every operation becomes far too easy and most unfortunate. Utter talent and steady success doesn't have to negate compassion. On an island that houses the Chrysler Building, Grand Central Station and the Brooklyn Bridge among thousands of other incomparable pre-war and modern structures, one can safely assume NYC is packed to the brim with the most phenomenally skilled architects across the globe. One would be correct. But what sets one architect apart from another has so much more to do with the initial approach than the finishing touches.
De-spec is an award winning, internationally recognized multi-disciplinary practice consisting of the most esteemed professionals, yes--but this New York based architecture design practice approaches and completes every project with the most calculated and exquisite precision unlike any other. Since 2002, Founder-Principal Designer Farnaz Mansuri and her fellow Principal Designers Tom Shea and Frederic Levrat put a sincere focus on the relation of space and its occupant when introduced to each and every new project, massive or minute. This small, seasoned group of designers fully understand and acknowledge that the interior details are as important for the dweller as the exterior, and no edge, surface or curve should be left out of careful consideration. The Creatives behind de-spec aren't solely a group of talented and thoughtful architects, they truly are groundbreaking artists, conceptualizing interior designs around the most imaginative instillations, unique materials and awe-inspiring silhouettes.
Located in the Chelsea Arts District, the de-spec studio is comprised of a small team of international talent that have lived and worked in Asia, Europe, Latin America and the Middle East. Founder and Principal Designer, Farnaz Mansuri, has experience working with world-renowned architectural firms I.M.Pei and James Stirling among many others. Principal Designer Tom Shea is a master of large scale instillations and product design, and has produced works that have been exhibited in Milan, Tokyo, New York, Miami and LA. Lofty recognitions aside, these Creatives are unique in the sense that they truly grasp the ever changing market and neighborhoods of NYC and they never begin a project until they fully and truthfully understand the client. We know all this to be the honest to goodness truth because we were lucky enough to somehow persuade both Mansuri and Shea to imagine, customize and fully design our first SoHo store. Deciphering the renderings of our future space was proof enough that we were safe in the hands of considerate, brilliant artists. But now that the finishing touches are carefully consuming their places and the dust is beginning to settle we are all truly in awe. De-spec has done it yet again. Only their most recent masterpiece is all for us, and we couldn't be more grateful.
Night before the big reveal. A most inspired production of Tom Shea and de-spec. 80 Thompson Street. Feldspar Brook.
